Language I’m a-Lovin’
Words, words, words. I am haunted by words. I love the English language in all of its sublime weirdness and mutability. Heck, I even kind of like figuring out text-message-speak…as long as it’s used in text messages and not more formal forms of communication. Over the last week or so I have had the privilege of learning the following three new words and one new phrase:
- attentivore: pretty much as it sounds…those who use and crave attention as others would use and crave food (coined by John C. on Len’s blog).
- booty skirt: this is also pretty much what it sounds like…a skirt that’s just long enough to cover one’s booty and that (according to the friend who defined it for me) “does not leave a lot of room for error.”
- failboat: as in “that dog won’t hunt.” This project or idea is a failboat. I may be too old to use this word because I saw it in a (really young) friend’s Facebook status update.
- test-run chicks: young ladies who are way too promiscuous for their own good. For example: Back in the day only test-run chicks wore booty skirts to school. Wear one to prom? Failboat. Sext message it out to your friends? Only the attentivores.
Thanks to all my Facebook/blogosphere buddies for fanning the flames of my passion for language.
